Scientism has stalled and irrevocably hurt the field of Ufology at the same time it has ruined the careers of those scientists who have expressed interest in unidentified aerial phenomena.

I can't but be biased--and it may sound self-serving--but as a philosophy professor I couldn't agree more with the author's comments. I've known religious fundamentalists for whom every conversation with "unbelievers" is regarded essentially as an opportunity to score points for their faith, or else propagandize for conversion. I've also known academic intellectuals (who are supposedly open-minded) to be entirely close-minded when it comes to, say, either certain thinkers (e.g., Carl Jung) or certain ideas and areas of inquiry (e.g., parapsychology or consciousness as a non-material reality). I know I've said this before, but at the risk of repeating myself, I'll say it again: our civilization is exhausted, and neither the classical scientific standpoint nor the existing religious traditions have the resources to take us further. The religions will continue to retreat into ever-more self-protective and irrational enclaves of "faith" while the hard-core scientific materialists will likewise continue to stonewall on the question of non-material reality and the nature of consciousness, leaving a giant gap where the future can begin to unfold.
